The foundation of the African American & African Diaspora Studies (AAADS) minor is critical race theory, in particular the premise that the construction of race and ethnicity is linked to systems of power and privilege influenced by social, historical and cultural processes.

Upon completion of the AAADS minor, you will be prepared to contribute to the creation of a more socially just world through your professional and civic efforts.

Accounting is much more than simply the organization of financial data. It is the application of analytical reasoning, critical thought, problem solving and decision-making. You will develop those skills in our Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in accounting program. It is more than just becoming an accountant – it is about becoming a great accountant.

The Mathematics and Statistics Department at Washburn University is proud to be the only school in the state of Kansas that has an actuarial science program recognized by the Society of Actuaries as an advanced undergraduate program.  Our coursework prepares majors in this program to be able to pass the first two examinations of the Society of Actuaries.

Expand your scope of practice by becoming an AEMT. These healthcare professionals have an expanded range of skills and abilities, allowing you to perform more advanced procedures such as administering certain medications, interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs) and using advanced airway devices. Make a difference in your community by filling this in-demand role.

This program, now located in a renovated lab on Washburn Tech's main campus, can prepare you to excel in the manufacturing field. You will study topics such as mechanical systems, hydraulics, controls, and pneumatics. The program also includes introductory courses in welding, machine tool and robotics. Additional courses are recommended such as technical communication and computer applications. 

As the study of humankind, anthropology examines the culture, society, and biology of humans and their closest relatives across time. Anthropology encompasses the following sub-disciplines:

• Cultural anthropology, the study of human cultures across the globe
• Archaeology, the study of the human past through material culture
• Physical anthropology, the study of human evolution and biological diversity
• Linguistics, the study of human language and its meaning in social context

Undergraduates with majors outside of Mass Media often pursue careers that require skills taught in Mass Media courses, such as crafting effective mediated messages, managing social media campaigns or shooting and editing videos.

The minor in Applied Media allows students to gain knowledge about digital tools and acquire hands-on skills that they will use to pursue the requirements of careers in their chosen majors. Students will complete 18 credit hours: MM 100 Introduction to Mass Media, MM 199 Media Bootcamp, MM 202 Creative Media Writing, MM 321 Visual Communication or MM 222 Cinematic Storytelling and an additional 6 credit hours selected in consultation with a Department of Mass Media adviser.

If you want to use your love of numbers to help solve the complex problems facing industry, or government then the Applied Statistics degree may be for you. You'll take courses in statistics and computer science that will prepare you for graduate study or for a career working in a variety of fields.

The BA and BFA in Art History are structured for the student interested in museum studies, art conservation and/or advanced work in art history or related fields.

Washburn Tech is one of the area’s top collision repair schools. Our program will prepare you with technical knowledge and skills to repair, reconstruct and finish automobile bodies. Our curriculum meets industry requirements and covers the areas of structural, non-structural, mechanical, electrical, painting, refinishing, damage estimation and safety. Students also receive hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art lab. For those who qualify, job shadowing and on-the-job training are available and may lead to career placement. 

The program prepares you with the knowledge and skills to repair, service and maintain all types of vehicles. Unlike auto repair schools in the past, Washburn Tech provides training that uses high tech diagnostic and repair tools on a fleet of late model vehicles in a new, cutting-edge facility. Instruction includes basic theory and familiarization of automotive components, engine repair and performance, steering and suspension, automatic and manual transmission, brakes and electricity/electronics.  The program is nationally certified and includes both classroom and hands-on learning. Tools and tool boxes are provided by Washburn Tech.  

You'll enjoy personalized attention, gain original research experience, and have opportunities for meaningful internships in Washburn's biochemistry program. Biochemistry is an excellent option for premed students. Graduates are also well prepared for a career in biomedical science or to pursue an advanced degree in the field of biochemistry. The program sets you up for success with scholarship opportunities, free tutoring, an active Chemistry Club and research funding, ensuring you have the resources to excel in your studies and career.

As a biology major at Washburn University, you will be exposed to the principles, which underlie this science of living things. You also may engage in study leading to a more detailed understanding of the area in which you are most interested, for each of the areas is tailored to meet specific interests and needs.

Woodworkers plan and complete cabinetry and furniture, as well as complete millwork projects using computerized machines. They cut, shape and assemble wooden articles as well as setup and operate a variety of woodworking machines. The cabinet and millwork program provides both theory and hands-on instruction. You will learn to work with blueprints, specifications and shop drawings, as well as operate power tools and equipment in design, layout and construction of projects. Our instructors emphasize selecting proper materials, determining the best procedures, manufacturing parts to specification, assembling and finishing. You will work both individually and in teams to plan, estimate and execute projects. 

A construction trades technician works on both commercial and residential projects, utilizing a wide range of skills and knowledge. Our program prepares you in several different areas, from surveying and concrete work to roof framing. The program provides instruction of basic theory and hands-on experience in carpentry, roof framing and masonry. 

Caring for others and their well-being is central to what certified medication aides or CMAs are all about! A CMA typically works in a long-term care facility, administering medication and treatments to patients in a safe and prescribed manner. In this career, strong people skills are important due to the amount of direct patient care. It also is a prerequisite for advanced training, allowing you to climb the health career ladder.

If you’re a caregiver by nature, classes to become a certified nurse aide or CNA might be right for you. CNAs provide a number of services to clients such as bathing, feeding and measuring vital signs. They may work in a long-term care facility, hospital, doctor’s office or other facility. Health care is one of the country’s fastest growing industries, making this career not only personally rewarding but also in demand.

Every chemistry graduate at Washburn completes at least one semester of faculty-mentored research, so you leave Washburn ready for graduate school or your career. The Washburn chemistry department is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers courses in all major chemistry fields, taught by expert faculty, not graduate students. Chemistry majors at Washburn have opportunities to present at conferences, do internships and join our ACS-recognized Chemistry Club.

The Washburn University Department of Communication teaches students the communication skills necessary to succeed in today's competitive workplaces.  The curriculum is designed to help students succeed both academically and professionally alongside a faculty that seeks to engage students as partners in their career preparation.

The Washburn University Department of Computer Information Sciences (CIS) seeks to prepare students for careers in software development, networking, database management, digital forensics or a wide variety of other computer science or information systems fields. The Department’s curricula is based on the ACM/IEEE CS2022 Model Curriculum. All classes are taught by knowledgeable professors and there are opportunities to work with professors on research projects and even get your work published. We have numerous internships available in the Topeka area, allowing you to gain valuable job experience.

The contemporary journalism concentration prepares students who want careers as writers, reporters, editors and designers, with newspapers, magazines, electronic entities and web publishers. The curriculum emphasizes storytelling through writing, reporting, editing, designing, producing and managing for print, audio, video and web. 

Careers in Contemporary Journalism: 

Students with a degree in contemporary journalism can choose to pursue a wide variety of media careers: reporter, editor, social media coordinator, newscaster, news analyst or program director. The contemporary journalism concentration produces graduates who are skilled at research, problem solving, critical thinking, meeting deadlines and creating content for diverse platforms for either internal or external audiences. 

In the creative advertising concentration, you'll explore the structure of the advertising industry and learn the strategies and tactics used in successfully advertising products and services on behalf of organizations and businesses. This includes strategically determining and understanding your target audience’s needs and desires, establishing the purpose of your brand’s advertising, and creating successful advertising campaigns and other marketing activities to fit within a business’s or organization’s goals.

Careers in Creative Advertising

Students with a degree in creative advertising can choose to pursue the following careers: account planner, brand manager, copywriter, advertising manager, advertising account executive or creative director, to name a few.

The Criminal Justice and Legal Studies degree programs prepare students to pursue advanced educational opportunities and to obtain productive careers in law enforcement, corrections, security administration, forensics, and the law. The programs are designed to produce knowledgeable students who possess the necessary theoretical, practical, and critical thinking skills to compete in today’s job market. Our culinary program will prepare you to be a productive member of any restaurant or culinary staff. You will learn culinary math, food safety and sanitation, use and care of equipment and food preparation and cooking skills. The program prepares you to apply technical knowledge and skills to work on light and heavy wheeled diesel-powered equipment. Instruction, covering several types of equipment, includes tune-up and overhauling, transmissions and differentials. Diesel technology is a hands-on, high-tech transportation career that is in demand.  Diesel technicians repair, service and maintain diesel-powered equipment. You might work on buses, trucks, farm and construction equipment or locomotives. Potential employers include trucking companies, large equipment dealers, and local governments.

Washburn's Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program offers a strong focus on entrepreneurship. It is the first DNP program in the United States to offer students enrollment in Master of Business Administration courses as part of the DNP curriculum. With a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, the DNP graduate is able to blend advance practice knowledge and skills with strong business acumen

Early childhood education professionals work in preschools, child care centers or home daycares and focus on the growth and development of children from infancy to six years of age. The economics curriculum is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the principles and institutions governing economic decisions made by households, businesses, and governments. This type of knowledge, combined with studies in related areas, provides an appropriate background for employment in financial and non-financial business firms and governmental agencies. It also provides a solid basis for graduate study in economics, business and public administration, urban planning and international studies. Economics is also one of the best pre-law options for students.

Teacher education at Washburn is a college-wide endeavor. All students seeking an initial license complete a well-rounded sequence of general education courses delivered by arts and sciences departments and all students complete a professional sequence of courses delivered through the Department of Education. Teacher candidates pursuing a kindergarten through grade six (K-6) license complete appropriate specialty courses offered by the Department of Education and receive a Bachelors of Education (B Ed) upon completion of required courses and clinical experiences. In the process of completing the K-6 program of study, teacher candidates choose one of five complementary options, four of which lead to a second teaching license. Candidates may choose to pursue a program of study leading to a birth through grade three license or a middle school (5-8) license in English, History, or Mathematics. The middle school license is delivered collaboratively between the Department of Education and the appropriate departments offering content for the 5-8-subject area. As a fifth option, candidates may pursue course work leading to a provisional license in special education. Completion of this license takes place at the graduate level.

Environmental biology explores the world we live in. You'll learn about the biology of plants, insects, and animals around us. Whether you're studying in a lab or in the field at Washburn's Karlyle Woods, you'll have the opportunity to explore in-depth and conduct research.

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Rehabilitation Science program prepares you to pursue a graduate level, professional degree program in exercise-related healthcare. This could include athletic training, exercise physiology, physical therapy, nutrition science/dietetics, occupation therapy, chiropractic or cardiac rehabilitation.

We prepare students for a variety of careers in the helping professions, including addiction counseling, youth services, victim/survivor services, gerontology/aging, mental health, and homelessness/poverty. The film and video concentration gives students an opportunity to gain both the technical and creative skills to be successful in the film and video industry. Courses emphasize each stage of the digital filmmaking process:  pre-production, production, and post-production. Areas of study include but are not limited to: screenwriting, video editing, cinematography, sound recording, documentary filmmaking, and studio production. 

Careers in Film and Video 

There are many career paths in film and video including: independent filmmaker, cinematographer, film or video editor, screenwriter, production manager, web video producer, corporate multi-media manager and sound designer. 

Minor 

For students who are interested in a special minor in Film and Video, there is an option of taking 21 credit hours and completing all courses in the Film and Video sequence: MM 100 Introduction to Mass Media, MM 199 Media Bootcamp, MM 222 Cinematic Storytelling, MM 312 Digital Cinematography, MM 372 Digital Filmmaking I, MM 350 Film and Editing Theory, MM 405 The Documentary Film and MM 414 Digital Filmmaking II. Students interested in this option should visit with a Department of Mass Media adviser. 

The finance curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in corporate financial management, commercial banking, security analysis, government services, insurance, real estate, and other finance fields and for graduate study. Students are encouraged to meet with faculty advisors as early as possible in order to plan a program, which will satisfactorily fulfill their goals.

This degree is the first bachelor-level Forensic Anthropology concentration in Kansas. Our majors will take classes, and get hands-on training, in our new lab in the state-of-the-art Kansas Bureau of Investigation Forensic Science Center on Washburn’s campus. They will also collaborate with faculty and students in the other forensic programs such as chemistry, biology, criminal justice, and computer science. Students may even have the opportunity to intern with KBI forensic scientists at the new facility.

Forensic anthropology applies the scientific knowledge of physical anthropology to the collection and analysis of legal evidence.

Washburn’s Forensic Biology program is the first of its kind in Kansas. In this hands-on program you’ll learn to use the power of science to understand evidence through a combination of laboratory skill-building and rigorous course work in biology, chemistry, criminal justice, genetics, and more.

You will complete an internship or research or an internship as well as learn from industry and subject experts in chemistry, forensic chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, calculus, communications, ethics and lab safety. You'll graduate from Washburn ready for a career or graduate school.

You have seen the TV shows and listened to the true-crime podcasts, but what does work in forensic science really look like? Crime scene investigators (CSIs) use science, critical thinking, and specialized tools to collect the facts and physical evidence present at a crime scene. CSIs work with law enforcement agencies to assist in putting the pieces of a criminal puzzle back together.

Are you interested in pursuing a degree where you learn from real professionals in the field, gain knowledge about real-world application and theory, and experience hands-on learning with real tools? The forensic investigation and forensic investigation sciences degree ensure students have the necessary skills, hands-on learning, and critical thinking that are necessary to work in jobs like crime scene investigator, evidence technician, forensic examiner and death investigator.

Get your foot in the door of the fast-growing industry of health care. CNA’s and home health aides may work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, clinics or private homes. They work under the direct supervision of a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse to meet the basic needs of patients. If you want to work in the growing field of game design, this minor will provide a strong foundation you can tailor to your area of interest. This minor will fit particularly well with the requirements of a major in art, computer information science, mass media’s film and video concentration, or mathematics but is open to students in all majors.

The major in general, business allows you the flexibility to design a 24-hour upper-division program using courses from several or all major areas in the School of Business based on your own interests and needs.

Learning objectives for the general business concentration:

• Apply quantitative and qualitative analysis and critical thinking to business problems.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the application of ethical concepts to business issues.
• Apply technology to the solution of diverse business issues and problems.
• Explain the relationships among the functional areas of business.
• Explain the impact of diversity on organizations.

An alternative program to the Bachelor of Science described above is the Bachelor of Science in General Science. A student may elect this program by substituting the following requirements for the major and minor requirements listed above. The candidate must take at least eight hours of course work in each of the subject areas of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Sciences, Mathematics and Physics/Astronomy. These hours must be in courses that would count toward a major in each of the respective departments. Also, an additional 20 hours of course work that would be appropriate for majors in the listed departments must be completed by the student, at least 12 hours of which must be in upper division courses. Students desiring middle school teaching certification in General Science should contact the certification office in the Department of Education for specific requirements relative to that certification. Candidates for this program should meet with the chairperson of the Natural Science and Mathematics division no later than their third semester to complete a declaration of major card.

The Bachelor of General Studies program is a flexible degree-completion program designed for nontraditional learners with busy schedules who have previously earned at least 45 credit hours. Take classes online, in-person or through a combination of both. Choose courses that will develop or enhance a range of skills valued by employers, including problem solving, critical thinking and analysis, and communication.

This certificate is constructed on the premise that a broader understanding of Gerontology is critical to meet the needs of an aging society. Expanded career opportunities in Gerontology are forecast in many areas, including healthcare, the helping professions, public policy, and more. Students in the health and helping professions may find this certificate particularly applicable to their career goals.

Washburn University’s Great TEXTS certificate program is an interdisciplinary program that engages students in reading transformative texts to explore big, timely, and timeless problems and questions of humankind.

The post-graduate certificate in healthcare education is available to students pursuing the Doctor of Nursing practice and to students who have completed a clinical masters or doctorate degree who would like to pursue a career in education at the postsecondary level.  The 9 hour certificate includes courses in foundational theory, assessment in healthcare education and curriculum and instruction. Nursing graduates are eligible to sit for the CCNE exam on completion of the sequence. 

The Bachelor of Arts in Health and Fitness Promotion is for students desiring to pursue careers in health promotion, wellness and/or fitness-related settings. Areas such as exercise and sports performance, personal fitness training, corporate wellness, recreation/leisure studies, public health management and not-for-profit health agencies are some examples. In addition, students could pursue advanced degrees in other health and fitness related professions but may need to complete additional course work to meet prerequisite requirements for graduate school.

Reliable and valid health information is vital to the health care industry, to researchers, and legal and financial professionals.  Public health officials depend on medical records for information about disease patterns and general health conditions.  Hospitals depend on accurate medical records for patient care, health statistics, reimbursement and protection in medico-legal matters.

The Master of Health Science (MHS) in Health Care Education mission is to prepare existing health care professionals to be effective teachers and leaders who are capable of serving diverse learners within health care organizations and allied health degree programs.

The MHS program is designed to provide small cohorts instruction in 8-week classes, one subject at a time, allowing full-time health care professionals to complete their master's degree while working full-time. Cohorts begin each fall.

There is a need for qualified managers within the health care field.  Regulatory issues, policy, technology, and financial issues are constantly changing within healthcare. Students pursuing the baccalaureate degree in Health Services Administration take advanced coursework in healthcare management and related healthcare issues, which increases their marketability for administrative positions at graduation.

The Washburn University Department of History offers clearly focused courses in United States and World History, small class sizes and, as a result, closer interactions with professors.  The faculty work with students to develop a clear map to mastery of the field; a course of study that is diverse in terms of both geographical and temporal ranges; and a capstone experience that calls of students to do history themselves to produce a scholarly research paper that fulfills the Scholarly/Creative Washburn Transformational Experience.

Home health aides make a remarkable difference in the lives of the sick, disabled or elderly. They assist other health care professionals in maintaining and restoring a client to optimum levels of physical and emotional well-being while allowing that person to stay at home. You also may provide personal care such as bathing, dressing and grooming a client. This is a quick course and moves you from a hospital setting into a residential setting.

As the world becomes more complex, the need for interdisciplinary educational experiences increases. To respond to this trend, Washburn University offers the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS).  BIS is a degree that gives students exposure to multiple disciplines that are relevant to their personal interests, goals, aspirations, or career path, despite never completing the full set of major requirements in a specific discipline.

The international business concentration is designed to equip graduates with skills suitable for employment at international and global enterprises. A student would understand advantages and challenges of doing business globally, understand different cultures, and be able to per­form business tasks in a different cultural and professional environment.

Learning objectives for the International Business concentration:

Designed to meet the requirements of a pre-pharmacy program, our Associate of Arts in Laboratory Science is also ideal for those who want to work as medical lab technologists or technicians.

This minor is constructed around the premise that a broader understanding of the issues facing Latin America, the Caribbean and the Latino/a population today is crucial in the global community.  The minor is also constructed around the second premise that nations do not exist in isolation.  Interaction and interdependence shaped nations in the Western hemisphere in the past, do so in the present, and will continue to do so in the future.

The Leadership Studies Minor and Certificate are interdisciplinary programs open to students in all majors and degree programs. The Leadership Studies Minor and Certificate combine academic, co-curricular and community leadership experiences.

The Leadership Studies Minor is designed to be completed concurrently while earning a baccalaureate degree. Students completing an associate degree or baccalaureate degree are able to earn a Leadership Studies Certificate.

Washburn Law's LL.M. in Global Legal Studies is for prospective students with a foreign law degree. This program, in addition to offering the usual career paths, also will prepares graduates to work with or across from U.S. counsel in a variety of transactions or disputes. The program allows students to build a course of study uniquely tailored to their interests and goals by pursuing a general track of study, as well as specialization in oil and gas law; corporate and commercial law; public law; and in legal analysis, writing, and advocacy.

The LPN articulation program at Washburn University is designed specifically for practical/vocational nurses to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). The basic program is four academic years in length. Qualified licensed LPNs may receive 18 hours of college credit for required coursework.

Clinical placements for nursing students are located throughout the Northeast region of the state. It is likely that you will be asked to commute to at least one clinical site outside of Topeka.

Graduates of the program are prepared as generalists in nursing and may function in a variety of nursing roles. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Licensing Examination (NCLEX) to be licensed as a registered nurse.

Management courses in the fields of organization theory, human relationships, administrative communication and related behavioral areas provide students with pertinent background for management careers in business and non-business organizations. The marketing curriculum involves analysis of the ways business firms and other types of organization plan, organize, administer and control their resources to achieve marketing objectives. Through proper selection of courses, you can prepare for a career in general marketing management, promotion management, personal selling and sales management, marketing research, channels management, and/or retail management.

In the molecular biology and biotechnology program, you'll study cells on different levels and how they interact. You'll have the opportunity to study viruses, immunology, biotechnology, and more.

Magnetic resonance (MR) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a procedure that uses pulses of radio wave energy along with a magnetic field to image a specific body area. Structure and function of the body are then presented as cross-sectional anatomy images. MR has greater soft tissue contrast than CT, thereby creating detailed images.

Technologists employed in magnetic resonance imaging may work in hospitals, imaging centers. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, technologists with certification in more than one diagnostic imaging area such as MR will be more marketable.

Peace, Justice and Conflict Resolution Studies is an interdisciplinary program of study, building on existing course offerings in a range of departments, that incorporates both international peace and justice issues, and through internship opportunities with community-based agencies, local dimensions of conflict resolution.

Washburn Tech's Phlebotomy certificate program has been created to meet the needs of the local medical community and can be a first step in getting your foot in the health care door.

The Bachelor of Education in Physical Education Teaching Degree is designed to prepare you to teach physical education in public or private schools.  This degree leads to licensure by the Kansas State Department of Education as a teacher at all levels, pre-school through 12th grade.  The B.Ed. additionally may serve those who wish to teach physical activities in recreational, community or private settings.

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is the only individual who assists the Physical Therapist in accordance with the American Physical Therapy Association’s policies and positions in the delivery of selected physical therapy interventions.  Interventions include therapeutic exercise, myofascial release, massage, range of motion, facilitation techniques, coordination, balance, motor learning, assistive device training, brace and supportive device training, and application of physical agents such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat, cold, and light based therapies.

The Washburn Physics & Astronomy Department offers degrees in Physics (with a B.S. or B.A. option), as well as the only Computational Physics degree in Kansas. We also offer an associate's degree (A.S.) in Engineering-Physics, along with the very popular Engineering Transfer and Engineering Dual-Degree programs. Public administration studies focus on issues such as public resources, accountability, and the description, analysis, solutions and synthesis of contemporary management problems in criminal justice agencies. The public relations concentration prepares you to manage communication programs of public and private organizations. The course sequence provides the knowledge and skills needed by professionals in all aspects of the public relations field and gives you hands-on practice with real-world clients in the classroom to help you build your resumes. 

Careers in Public Relations 

Students with a degree in public relations can choose to pursue many different types of careers including the following: account coordinator, marketing assistant, event coordinator, public relations specialist, digital media manager, conflict resolution specialist, crisis communications specialist, account executive, public information officer, or public relations manager.

The Radiation Therapy program is an online program, which is administered through the School of Applied Studies, Department of Allied Health.  The program curriculum at Washburn is an accredited, 13-month certificate of completion program.  Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are registry eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Classes begin in late June or early July and finish the following July.  The program consists of 40 credit hours of required related courses and clinical education.

Radiography education at Washburn University is administered through the School of Applied Studies and is designed to prepare an individual to become an entry-level radiologic technologist (radiographer). Classes begin mid-August and include one summer session. Completion of the 21-month program enables a graduate to apply for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The program consists of general education, required related courses such as anatomy and physiology, radiography lecture, labs and clinical courses. Program structure allows for simultaneous completion of lecture and clinical education requirements. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, graduates are awarded an associate of science degree.

Religious studies courses explore the human side of religion from humanistic, anthropological, and social-scientific perspectives; majors and minors in religious studies develop a broad knowledge of traditions from around the world, a deep understanding of particular topics, and vital skills in critical thinking and intercultural communication.

A health care professional skilled in the assessment, evaluation, treatment, management, and care of patients with respiratory problems.  Clinical tasks are diagnostic and therapeutic to include administration of medical gases (oxygen, helium, and carbon dioxide), aerosol and humidity therapy, intermittent positive-pressure breathing (IPPB) therapy, incentive spirometry, artificial mechanical ventilation, arterial blood gas analysis, and pulmonary function testing.  The respiratory therapist also has a knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and medicine sufficient to serve as a supervisor and consultant.  The minimum educational requirements is an associate (2-year) degree.  Those registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care are designated RRT, Registered Respiratory Therapist.

The RN-to-BSN program is an opportunity for registered nurses with an associate degree or diploma to pursue the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Washburn University offers an innovative, integrative curriculum designed for the busy working professional nurse.

Sociology is the “study of social life, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior” (www.asanet.org). Sociologists study topics from welfare to health care reform, from organized religion to cults, from poverty to concentrations of wealth, from war to natural disasters, from aging to population change, from social media to music and film, from deviance to social order, from law to crime, from divisions of race/class/gender to shared cultural meanings. Students may go on to careers in areas such as social services (juvenile justice system, battered women shelters, disaster planning/relief), administrative support (information technology, human resources, employee training), social science researcher and/or analyst, law, education (graduate school, professor), marketing (copy writing, technology or software), and law enforcement.

Sonography can be used to examine many parts of the body, such as the abdomen, breasts, female reproductive system, prostate, heart, and blood vessels. Sonography is increasingly being used in the detection and treatment of heart disease, heart attack, and vascular disease that can lead to stroke.

The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) defines sonography as diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. This type of procedure is often referred to as a sonogram or ultrasound scan.

Students who plan to major in Spanish are encouraged to begin their language studies as soon as they enter Washburn University, and should continue to enroll in at least one language course each semester until graduation. Learning a foreign language is a cumulative process and any period away from the language is highly detrimental to developing and maintaining necessary skills in the language.

Move from the classroom to the operating room with a surgical technology career.  Surgical technologists maintain the operating room by selecting and opening sterile supplies, assembling and setting-up equipment for surgical procedures and anticipating the surgeon’s needs while providing the necessary sterile items in an efficient manner.  If you are focused, assertive, organized and a quick thinker, this career might be for you. The operating room can be demanding and stressful, but it can also be a rewarding way to help others and yourself. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology Administration program is designed for the student who has completed an Associate of Applied Science degree in a technical area.  It is designed to give you credit for your technical courses without repeating coursework to attain a bachelor's degree.
