What we do

  • Distribute news releases about campus events, faculty, staff and student accomplishments and other campus happenings to area media outlets.
  • Work with media professionals to coordinate interviews with faculty and staff or act as spokespersons for Washburn University.
  • Plan events throughout the year including Strawberry Breakfast, Family Day faculty and staff tailgate and the annual faculty and staff Holiday Party among others.
  • Coordinate communications for major Washburn efforts such as Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the United Way campaign, among others.
  • Take pictures at university events and activities and maintain a photo archive.
  • Manage the Ichabod mascot program.
  • Manage the Washburn University licensing program.
  • Keep the Washburn website current and fresh with stories about faculty, students and campus events.
  • Produce the weekly Bod Talk e-newsletter sent to all students, faculty and staff at Washburn, detailing events and activities on campus.

Social media can be a great way to connect with others, including students, employees, alumni, fans, and the University. If you are interested in setting up a social media account to represent any part of the university, know that it must follow the social media policies and procedures laid out in the Washburn University Policies, Regulations, and Procedures Manual. This social media policy is in effect for faculty, staff and students who participate in social media for and on behalf of the university.

University-affiliated social media accounts must be registered with the public relations office. Register your social media account.

The public relations department is responsible for maintaining the university's visual brand standards and runs the licensing program. Merchandise bearing the university's name or any of its marks must be purchased through a licensed vendor. For more information view our licensing page.
