Free counseling services for Washburn students

At Washburn University, we believe that taking care of your mental health is key to your success, both academically and personally.

Supporting your well-being with free campus counseling

Our free counseling services provide short-term, focused support to help you manage stress, build resilience, and develop strategies for thriving on campus. Students can access a variety of therapy techniques, including solution-focused counseling, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, and interpersonal methods, tailored to address common challenges you may face during college.

Counseling Services is intended to provide short term assistance to navigate circumstances that arise during college. If we determine that you would benefit from longer-term care or specialized support, we'll connect you with trusted community providers who can meet those needs.

Please note: We're unable to provide services related to ongoing court cases including disability petitions as our focus is on helping you navigate college life.

How do I know if I need counseling?

College life can be very stressful. Sometimes you can handle these stresses on your own, at other times you may need assistance. Anything that is of concern to you is a legitimate topic to explore with a counselor. If you are feeling depressed, anxious or extremely distracted, counseling may be helpful. Needing help at times is normal. Asking for help takes courage.

Sometimes students shy away from counseling because they don’t know what to expect. At Counseling Services, you’ll find a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can speak privately yet openly about your thoughts and feelings. The counselor can help you gain insight into your concerns and explore options for change. Decisions about possible solutions to your concerns, however, are yours to make.
Confidentiality is taken very seriously by the counseling staff. Only you have the right to tell others that you are speaking to a counselor. All counseling staff members are ethically and legally bound and committed to maintaining your privacy. There are exceptions to information held confidentially which will be explained to you during your initial counseling session.
Our services are available to all currently enrolled Washburn and Washburn Tech students at no cost. Scheduled appointments can be made Monday-Friday any time between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Counseling Services works very closely with Student Health Services in situations in which a student may need medication. We also make referrals to psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners as needed.
The counselors at Counseling Services are not certified as drug and alcohol counselors. However, if you are wondering if you may have a drug or alcohol problem, please make an initial appointment with Counseling Services.
