Reopening Information

We're so excited to welcome you back to the Student Recreation and Fitness Center on Monday, June 15. The SRWC is committed to doing all that we can to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, while at the same time allowing for the opportunity to get a quality workout. To provide a safe and healthy experience for the entire Washburn University community we have a shared responsibility.

Learn more about Washburn's response to COVID-19.

We encourage all members to follow these best practices to help keep yourself and others healthy:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or sanitize your hands when water is not available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Thoroughly wipe down equipment before and after every use with the sanitation supplies provided by SRWC and ensure all trash is discarded in designated waste receptacles
  • Abide by the physical distancing guidelines by keeping a 6-foot distance between users, or Rec staff at all times when using the SRWC unless acute injury, risk mitigation, or safety measures require otherwise

What you need to know:

  • We will be open Monday-Friday 11 am-7 pm and CLOSED Saturday and Sunday. An hour before we reopen each day will be spent cleaning all equipment and high touch areas.
  • Patrons must wear masks at all times in the facility unless actively engaged in exercise on cardio equipment.
  • Our staff will be cleaning as well but we need everyone to help with the cleaning process. DO NOT spray cleaner directly onto cardio machines as this can damage the equipment. Spray the towel first and then wipe.
  • A six-foot distance will be maintained between all equipment. This will be accomplished by taking the track offline and placing a few cardio and weight equipment out of service.
  • Patrons using free weights shall maintain six feet of separation except when a spotter is necessary. In this instance, workout groups shall be limited to two people.
  • Equipment checkout will be suspended for the summer semester but you are welcome to bring in your locks, balls, and mats to use.
  • Water fountains will be closed but the filling stations will remain open.
  • Basketball courts will be open but no pickup or organized games will be allowed.

Thank you for doing your part as we work together to keep our Washburn University community safe. Guidelines may change based on the guidance of the State of Kansas, Washburn University, and Shawnee County Health Department.
