How to apply
Please follow theses steps to apply to the respiratory therapy program:
- Apply to and be accepted into Washburn University if you are not currently enrolled at Washburn University.
- Apply to the Respiratory Therapy program. Paper applications will also be accepted in 2027 but must be delivered or mailed to the Respiratory Therapy Program at School of Applied Studies, Room 201 A, Washburn University 1700 SW College Ave., Topeka, KS 66621.
Note: If you have previously applied for admission to the respiratory therapy program, you must resubmit all application packet documents for the current year's criteria. There is no guarantee of acceptance to the respiratory therapy program at Washburn University, even if applying for a second or third time.
Selection process
If all minimum requirements are met and all materials received on time, the program committee will evaluate and score the materials. Submit all required materials to the Allied Health Office, located in the School of Applied Studies Building. Once the application is complete, the candidate will receive an email. Positions are offered to the top 18 applicants. Students are encouraged to apply to more than one Allied Health Program, as applicants typically exceed the 18 spots available.
Selection of candidates for the program is based on:
- Academic record (GPA and college level courses with a grade of "C" or better)
- Answers to the application questions
- Letters of recommendation
- Past work experience (other licenses such as CNA)
- Volunteer work
After you've been accepted to the program
- Attend orientation with program faculty (a date will be provided in the acceptance letter).
- Your health insurance, Hepatitis B vaccine (or signed declination), TB skin test and all identified vaccines must be up to date.
- A physical examination, a criminal background check, and a urine drug screen will be required of all accepted respiratory therapy students prior to entry into Spring Semester clinical education (AL 187).
Application Deadline
Completed applications must be received by February 1 for the next fall semester. Secondary deadline is June 1. The program will continue accepting applications after June 1 if openings exist. Acceptance to Washburn University does not constitute acceptance to the RT program.
