Career Accomplishments

David L. Sollars serves as Dean and Professor of Economics at the Washburn University School of Business. Since 2003, he has been responsible for leading the School’s high-quality AACSB-accredited undergraduate, and graduate programs, and the Washburn University Kansas Small Business Development Center (WUKSBDC). During his tenure as dean the School has added programs in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, International Business, Data Analytics, Master of Accountancy, Kansas Insurance Certificate, and joint programs in nursing and law. Working in tandem with the Washburn University Foundation, the School's combined endowment has grown to $20 million.

Sollars has written extensively in the area of public sector economics and policy with articles appearing in Public Choice, Journal of Economics and Finance Education, Public Finance Quarterly, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Review of Regional Studies, Journal of Economics and Finance, Journal of Business Ethics Education, and he is a frequent contributor to TK Business magazine and media sources. He has provided economic analyses for government and business and speaks on economic, strategic management, and business education topics. 

Sollars was President of the Academy of Economics and Finance (AEF) and served as President of the MidAmerican Business Deans Association. He serves on the board of Junior Achievement of Kansas (Chairman, 2009-10) and is a volunteer JA teacher at Seaman Middle School. He also serves on the boards of the Kansas Business Hall of Fame, Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish Finance Council, Kansas Insurance and Financial Services Education Foundation, and is a member of Sales and Marketing Executives of Topeka (President, 2012-13) and the Washburn Rural High School Business Advisory Council.  Other past board service includes the Metropolitan Ballet of Topeka, Washburn University Catholic Center Finance Council and the Stormont-Vail HealthCare Foundation. He was a member of the 2004 Leadership Greater Topeka class, and 2007 Leadership Kansas class, and has served on several economic development and community development task forces and committees.

He is a frequent peer review team chair for business schools involved in the AACSB accreditation process, served as a steering committee member for AACSB’s Small School Affinity Group, and currently serves on the AACSB Initial Accreditation Review Committee.

He and his wife, Tricia, have two married daughters, Lindsay Carraway and Juliana Mazachek, and eight grandchildren. They are members of Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish.  He enjoys music, history, model railroading, and motorcycling. He is a long-suffering fan of both the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.
