Master of Health Science (MHS) Graduate Degree - 36 credit hours

The MHS master’s degree in health care education is available to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree, hold a credential or license in a health care profession or specialty, have two years professional work experience in a healthcare environment and are interested in pursuing a master’s degree with an emphasis in education. Professional experience may include but is not limited to, healthcare administration, health information technology, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, radiologic technology, dental hygiene or other healthcare specialties.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Under no circumstances will academic credit be awarded for live experiences.
  2. Applicants for unconditional acceptance must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  3. Applicants for conditional acceptance must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 -3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of study.
  4. Licensed or credentialed in a health care profession.
  5. Minimum of 2 years work experience in a health care profession including, but not limited to:
    • Dental Hygiene
    • Health Care Administration
    • Health Information Technology
    • Occupational Therapy
    • Physical Therapy
    • Radiation Therapy
    • Radiologic Technology
    • Respiratory Therapy
    • Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Application Process

  1. Complete the Online Graduate Application (select Degree Seeking when prompted). The online graduate application requires that you:
    • Create an account.
    • Pay an application fee ($40).
    • Upload unofficial transcripts.
    • Upload a 1-page personal statement discussing background information about your educational/professional experiences and reasons for wanting to enter the MHS program. Applicants applying for conditional acceptance must explain why the cumulative grade point average is lower than 3.0 and how the applicant expects to be successful at the graduate level.
    • Upload resume detailing education and professional credentials and experience.
    • Acknowledge an attestation clause regarding the program’s schedule and requirements.
  1. Submit official undergraduate transcripts reflecting Bachelor's degree earned to Washburn University Admissions using one of the following methods:
    • Send electronically to

Requirements for Earning the Master of Health Science Degree

  1. Complete 36 hours of course work within six years.
  2. Complete required coursework with a cumulative GPA of no lower than 3.0.       
  3. Maintain continuous enrollment each regular semester (fall and spring).
