- Scholarly Interests/Activities
My main research interests focus on the biology of free-living amoeboflagellates of the genus Naegleria. Current research projects involve examining Kansas freshwater sources for the prevalence of Naegleria sp., particularly those that are thermophilic. Additional work examines the structure and function of the ribosomal DNA plasmids within Naegleria, particularly with respect to identifying DNA elements and factors involved in plasmid replication and maintenance. Collaborating with Drs. Paul and Tracy Wagner, my lab is also examining the pH sensitivity of Naegleria potassium ion channels. Dr. Matt Arterburn and I are collaborating on a pedagogical study that involves students watching laboratory technique videos prior to coming to the lab and monitoring students’ performances in lab when compared with students who did not view the videos ahead of time.
