How to apply
If you’ll be attending college for the first time since graduating high school or earning your GED, you will need to complete these steps to be admitted to Washburn:
- Complete the free application for admission
- Send us your high school transcripts
- Send us your official college transcripts (if any college credit has been taken)
*Test scores are not required for admission or academic merit scholarships, but they may be required for specialized scholarships.
Admission requirements for High School and Home School Students
- Students with a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher are quickly admitted. Washburn provides you with a personalized academic pathway, either in the department you choose, with one of our exploratory advisors or through the Center for Student Success.
- If you have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, you automatically receive an academic merit scholarship. You may also be eligible for specialized and department scholarships.
GED Students
If you did not graduate from a high school, you may qualify for admission by taking the GED and submitting your official GED diploma. Admission exceptions are granted on a case-by-case basis.

Thinking of making Washburn your new home? We’d love to have you! If you’ve previously attended a post-secondary institution, we’ll need:
- A completed free admissions application
- Official transcripts from each post-secondary school where you’ve taken courses for credit
- High school transcripts

Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
If you meet one of the following criteria, you will be granted admission:
- 0-29 college credit hours with a GPA ≥ 1.80 OR;
- 30-59 college credit hours with a GPA ≥ 1.90 OR;
- 60 or more college credit hours with a GPA ≥ 2.00.
Welcome back, Ichabod! If you’ve previously attended Washburn, you can return to the same degree status (degree or non-degree seeking) by completing this form.
If you wish to change your degree status to degree seeking, you should complete an admission application and follow the how-to-apply instructions for a first-time freshman listed above.
If you are or have taken classes as a high school student, you should complete the undergraduate admission application and follow the steps listed above on how to apply as a first-time freshman.
In addition to general admission to Washburn, some programs require a separate application for admission due to capacity limitations within the program. Admission to these programs will be through the respective departments and not through the Office of Admissions.
