Children from birth through age 19 are the largest single group (42%) receiving emergency food assistance. Also, a significant portion of those needing emergency food (47%) are children or senior citizens - persons who are too young or too old to join the workforce. The working poor is the largest group of families (41%) receiving emergency food assistance.

Can Emporia

CAN EMPORIA is happening now! The Washburn Student Government Associations will be collecting cans and monetary donations from September 14th - October 30th. All cans will be donated to Topeka area food banks, including Washburn’s new food bank, specifically for Washburn Students and Staff. Cans and monetary donations will be collected in the WSGA office, located in the lower level of the Memorial Union, as well as a dozen other locations across campus. Stay tuned using our Can Emporia Facebook and Twitter for exciting competitions, prizes, and what is happening next during this exciting time!

Community members are strongly encouraged to participate in triumphing over Emporia State University, while helping those in need: a value instilled in all Ichabods, past and present. Washburn University is located at 1700 SW College Ave, Topeka, KS 66621. Student organizations are welcome to stop by the office from 9:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m. to donate cans, and all cans from student organizations will be marked with the respective organization.

Food Item Equivalents

  • Ramen Noodles = 1/4 of a CAN (4 packages = 1 CAN)

  • Jarred items - 12oz or more (peanut butter, mayonnaise, pickles, etc.) = 3 CANS

  • Boxes of cereal - 12oz or more = 3 CANS

  • Macaroni & Cheese = 1 CAN

  • $1 = 3 CANS

What's Can Emporia?

Can Emporia is an annual competition at Washburn University against Emporia State University. The cans raised go to local food pantries in the Topeka Community. The university who collects the most amount of cans wins.

Emporia State University and Washburn University begin to collect cans/goods on September 14, 2015 and must stop collecting by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015.
