He was faculty advisor for the Washburn Finance Society (WFS) for 23 years. WFS is a student organization fostering educational activities for Washburn University students interested in finance: link containing historical information on WFS. Professor Hull's major areas of instruction and research are corporate finance and personal finance. He is author and developer of the Capital Structure Model (CSM) that extends Modigliani and Miller (1958, 1963) and lays the foundations for current capital structure perpetuity theory. The CSM encompasses many aspects of capital structure theory including growth, agency effects (particularly, wealth transfers), financial distress effects and personal taxes. He has done research in many other areas outside capital structure and these include hedge funds, seasoned equity offering (SEOs), initial public offerings (IPOs), insider ownership, issuance costs, entrepreneurial financing, stock market volatility, tax policy, hedge funds, stock derivatives, green financing, retirement planning, business growth, and R&D expenditures. He has 67 publications including 48 in recognized, peer-reviewed finance journals such as Financial Management, Journal of Financial Research, Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Financial Services Review, The Journal of Financial Education, Investment Management and Financial Innovations, Journal of International Managerial Finance, Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance, and The Journal of Finance Case Research, and many other publications involving supplements for textbooks: link to list of publications. Prof. Hull has been guess editor four times for established finance journals. He serves on many professional committees and journals, university committees and School of Business committees where the latter includes being former chair of the Planning and Review Committee.
