Dr. Averett has been teaching at Washburn University since the fall of 2008.

Scholarly Interests/Activities

Dr. Averett is an avid chamber musician and in 2008 created the Washburn University Faculty Brass Quintet. The WUFBQ has been awarded five federal and state grants to provide concerts for underprivileged schools and communities. The WUFBQ has performed in over 200 schools and has been featured on KTWU, KSNT and WIBW. Under Dr. Averett’s leadership, the WUFBQ has performed at regional and national events including the Kansas Music Educator’s Convention and the 2016 International Horn Symposium. Dr. Averett also founded, and coaches, the Washburn University Honor’s Brass Quintet.

Service Interests/Activities

Dr. Averett has served as the Department of Music’s Scholarship Coordinator since 2012. Outside of his work-related duties, Dr. serves in the community as a mentor at the House of Joshua and as a consultant for the local Salvation Army Brass band.

Career Accomplishments

Dr. Averett has performed throughout the United States, England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Mexico, Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand and China. Dr. Averett has been a guest recitalist and lecturer throughout the Southeast and Midwestern United States with multiple high school and university wind ensembles, orchestras and marching bands. Notable international engagements include: the Beijing Modern Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Normal University, Ho Chi Minh Conservatory of Music in Saigon, Vietnam, the Nanjing University of the Arts, the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Chung Yuan Christian University in Taipei, Taiwan, the Mahidol Conservatory of Music in Bangkok, Thailand and the Royal Northern Conservatory in Manchester, England.

Dr. Averett is currently a member of the IHS World Orchestra, but has held other positions, or performed with, the Orquestra Sinfonica of Monterrey, Mexico, the Wichita Grand Opera, the Topeka Symphony, the Columbus Philharmonic (IN), the Marion Philharmonic, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, the Western-Piedmont Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium.

Dr. Averett has performed with a variety of other ensembles including the Derby City Brass Band, Old Crown Brass Band, Louisville Metro Big Band, the Free State Brass Band, America’s Hometown Band, the Central Indiana Brass and the Top City Brass. Dr. Averett was also a Solo cornet and Repiano cornet with the Fountain City Brass Band and participated in four of the band's North American Titles. Dr. Averett was a part of the FCBB as they were voted "Best Performance in the World by a Brass Band in 2009" and when they became the first North American band to win a major European Championship; The 2009 Scottish Open.

Dr. Averett has recorded multiple CD’s including Over the Rainbow, which was named the Best Album of the Year by 4barsrest.com and Avalon, which was recorded in the summer of 2019 by a group he co-founded; the MIENT DUO. Dr. Averett leads the Washburn University Faculty Brass Quintet, who have performed over 400 concerts for inner city “at risk” schools and performed for the Kansas Music Educator's State Convention and The International Horn Symposium. In his field, Dr. Averett has been a contributor to the International Trumpet Guild Journal and has adjudicated at the National Trumpet Competition and Music Teacher's National Association.
