Dr. Averett has been teaching at Washburn University since the fall of 2008.

Scholarly Interests/Activities

Dr. Averett is an avid chamber musician and in 2008 created the Washburn University Faculty Brass Quintet. The WUFBQ has been awarded five federal and state grants to provide concerts for underprivileged schools and communities. The WUFBQ has performed in over 200 schools and has been featured on KTWU, KSNT and WIBW. Under Dr. Averett’s leadership, the WUFBQ has performed at regional and national events including the Kansas Music Educator’s Convention and the 2016 International Horn Symposium. Dr. Averett also founded, and coaches, the Washburn University Honor’s Brass Quintet.

Service Interests/Activities

Dr. Averett has served as the Department of Music’s Scholarship Coordinator since 2012. Outside of his work-related duties, Dr. serves in the community as a mentor at the House of Joshua and as a consultant for the local Salvation Army Brass band.

Career Accomplishments

Before coming to Washburn University, Dr. Averett held positions, and performed with, the Columbus Philharmonic, the Marion Philharmonic, the Muncie Symphony, the Orquestra Sinfonicia of Monterrey, Mexico, the Owensboro Symphony, the Topeka Symphony, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, the Western-Piedmont Symphony Orchestra and the JCC Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Averett has been invited to perform at the National Trumpet Competition and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. Dr. Averett has been the recipient of concerto competition prizes and has been a guest recitalist and clinician throughout the southeast and mid-western United States with high school and university wind ensembles, orchestras and marching bands. Dr. Averett has also performed internationally in Australia, Mexico, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and China.

From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Averett was a solo cornet in the Fountain City Brass Band. While in the FCBB, Dr. Averett won two U.S. Open National Championship titles, three North American Brass Band Championship titles and was a part of the 2009 "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" album, which was deemed the best Brass Band album of 2009 by fourbarsrest.com. Dr. Averett was a also a part of the band when they became the first North American Brass Band to ever win a major European Championship, the 2009 Scottish Open. Dr. Averett has also performed with the Derby City Brass Band, The Old Crowne Brass Band, The Fort Wayne Bach Colleguim, The Hickory Choral Society, America’s Hometown Band and the Louisville Metro Big Band.

As an adjudicator, Dr. Averett has judged state solo and large ensemble events from Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, MTNA, and at the National Trumpet Competition.  Dr. has been published by the Ball State University Press and by the International Trumpet Guild Journal.
