Washburn University President Jerry Farley announces the two-year appointment of Laura Stephenson as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
“After reviewing candidates from across the country, it is refreshing to know we are fortunate to have a person here at Washburn with the experience, qualifications and capabilities required for this position,” Farley said.
Stephenson joined Washburn in 1985 as a faculty member of the psychology department and served from 2000 to 2003 as chairwoman of that department. She was named associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2004 and assumed the post of interim dean in 2013.
Prior to Washburn, Stephenson held positions at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.; the Bert Nash Community Health Center in Lawrence; and the Topeka State Hospital.
She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Goucher College, Baltimore, Md., and a master’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Kansas. Stephenson is a licensed psychologist in the state of Kansas and her research focus is in the area of child clinical psychology and family systems. She is published in journals such as the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and Behavior Research and Therapy and has presented at national conferences, such as the American Psychological Association.
Stephenson is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and the American Psychological Association. Her community activities have included membership on the Topeka High School Site Council and volunteering with Family Promise in Lawrence.
