Dia de los Muertos woodcuts at Mulvane Art Museum Oct. 15 - 24

Dia de los Muertos selections from the collection of woodcuts created by Yucatan artist Alberto Garcia M. will be shown Oct. 15 to Nov. 23 at the  Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University.

A reception will be 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 in the second floor Center Gallery.

A corresponding lecture, “Dia de los Muertos,” will be presented by Gregorio Luke at 7 p.m. the same day (Friday, Oct. 25) in Washburn Room A of the Memorial Union. Luke is an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture.

Day of the Dead traditions include gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The observance is in conjunction with All Saints' Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls' Day on Nov. 2 and often includes the building and decorating of private altars honoring the deceased and taking gifts to the grave sites.

The Mulvane Art Museum, ArtLab and gift shop are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Admission is free. The museum is closed major holidays.

The Mulvane is located on the campus of Washburn University, at 17thand Jewell Streets.

Free parking is available directly to the west of the museum. Call 785.670.1124 or go to
