Washburn University students, faculty, staff and Topeka community members will be formally welcomed by Washburn President Jerry Farley at University Convocation at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, White Concert Hall, Garvey Fine Arts Center, Washburn campus.
This event marks the beginning of the academic year, at which members of the Class of 2017 are welcomed to Washburn. Convocation also signals the start of the collegiate journey and ushers students into the community of scholars.
Convocation speakers include Farley; John Haverty, president, Washburn Alumni Association Board, and assistant director, information technology services; Shelbie Konkel, Haysville, president, Washburn Student Government Association; Richard Liedtke, executive director, enrollment management; Randy Pembrook, vice president, academic affairs and professor, music; and Tony Silvestri, lecturer, history. Debuting during Convocation will be Washburn’s sesquicentennial history video (part three of a five part series). The Washburn Jazz I Combo also will provide music.
After Convocation, attendees will attend a campus picnic at 5 p.m. in the Washburn Room, Memorial Union, where members of Washburn’s executive staff will serve food. Following the picnic the fun continues with WU Fest, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the Union lawn, and Traditions Night at 8 p.m. in Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl.
