Three alumni and a longtime professor will be honored at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 27, during the Washburn University Alumni Awards banquet at the Memorial Union.
Awards and honorees are as follows:
Distinguished Service Award: Carol (Lyon) Vogel, ba ’67, Topeka. Vogel has worked at Washburn for more than 40 years as an instructor of German and as equal opportunity director for the university. She has received numerous awards during her career, and her service to the community includes being a board member of the Brown Foundation for Education Equity and Nonoso advisor.
Lilla Day Monroe Award: Cynthia (Schmidt) Heath, ba ’71, Chesterfield, Mo. Heath is the vice president of executive compensation for Emerson Electric Co. of St. Louis. She also has worked as an attorney and as a social science teacher at Topeka West. She is a trustee of the Washburn University Foundation and was a member of Delta Gamma and competed in gymnastics while attending Washburn.
Col. John Ritchie Award: Gary Baker, professor, School of Business, Topeka. Baker is a professor of finance at Washburn, where he has been teaching for nearly 40 years. He is a recipient of the Jack and Betty Dicus and Ned Fleming Excellence in Teaching awards and is involved in the Boy Scout Merit Badge program offered through the university.
Graduate of the Last Decade: Ingrid Bego, ba ’03, Hastings, Neb. Bego is an assistant professor of political science at Hastings College in Nebraska. She is chairwoman of the Midwest Political Science Association and serves as a member of the YWCA diversity board and Multicultural Alliance of Hastings, Neb. Bego is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Sigma Iota.
