Washburn University recently concluded two donation drives to benefit the Topeka community. The annual campus-wide Toys for Tots collection brought in more than $1,000 and 500 toys for area children and the Ichabod Shop generated 10 boxes of gently used clothing and shoes for the Topeka Rescue Mission with its Trade WU for New sale.
The Toys for Tots drive kicked off in early December and concluded Friday with a total of 508 toys and $1,030. This well surpassed the 2011 collection of 386 toys and $606.63 and the goal set by the committee of 400 toys and $1,000. Last year, the United States Marine Corps Reserve presented Washburn University a Commander’s Award for its collection efforts.
Collection boxes were placed in 23 locations around campus as well as at Washburn Institute of Technology. Students participated as well. The social work student organizations held a fundraiser that brought together in-home sales vendors and a local barbecue restaurant at a local church for an afternoon of holiday shopping. They raised $250. Another student coordinated a collection at her off-campus job that netted 55 toys.
Staff Sergeant William Schneider, coordinator of the local Toys for Tots effort, and Sergeant Nick Jaqua, both of the General Support Ammunition Platoon stationed in Topeka, attended Washburn’s faculty and staff holiday party Dec. 13. Marines also attended an Ichabods and Lady Blues basketball game that included a donation. The Marines distribute the toys to local families.
The third annual Trade WU for New event ran for much of November at the Ichabod Shop, in the lower level of the Memorial Union. Anyone who brought in gently used clothing items for the Topeka Rescue Mission received a discount on new Washburn imprinted merchandise. Kevin Beebe, course materials coordinator, said the first year netted one box for the mission. He delivered 10 boxes to the mission’s warehouse on Friday afternoon.
“It’s grown every year,” he said.
Both collection efforts support local Topeka-area residents and are planned for 2013.
