Washburn Tech is hosting the 6th annual Rotary Youth Career Day, Friday, May 4. The event, sponsored by the Topeka Downtown Rotary Club, is an opportunity for youth from USD 501 middle schools to meet and talk with current Washburn Tech students about a wide variety of technical and non-technical careers and to tour Washburn Tech’s career programs. More than 25 careers in construction, health care, human services, technology, and transportation will be represented at the Career Day. The Topeka Downtown Rotary Club is sponsoring the transportation of middle school students to the Youth Career Day and snacks are provided by Washburn Tech’s Culinary Arts program.
Joyce Martin, Vocational Chair of the Downtown Topeka Rotary Club, states, “The Downtown Rotary Club is proud to be a partner with Washburn Tech in offering middle school students an opportunity to learn more about technical and non-technical career paths.”
Martin stressed the importance of Rotary’s belief in high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the focus on youth are values which drive Rotary’s partnership in this community activity. Over 20 Rotarians have a part in the day’s event. In addition to the Career Day, the Downtown Rotary Club sponsors three scholarships per academic year for Washburn Tech students.
Washburn Tech offers 25 technical programs, most of which are about 48 credits in length, in one of five divisions – Technology, Human Services, Health Care, Construction, and Transportation. In addition, short-term continuing education and custom courses are also offered.
