“Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen” by best-selling author Joe Drape is the 2012-2013 academic year book selected for Washburn University’s iREAD program.
The book “Our Boys” chronicles the 2008 Smith Center historic football season and winning streak with Coach Roger Barta and was selected for the 2012 Kansas Reads Project.
Drape, who is a sports writer for The New York Times, will deliver the 2012-2013 iREAD lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, in White Concert Hall, Garvey Fine Arts Center, Washburn campus. “Our Boys” is available for purchase at a discount in the Washburn University Bookstore, located in the Memorial Union.
All incoming first-year Washburn students are introduced to the book at summer orientation events and are encouraged to read the book over the summer. During the fall 2012 semester, students will read this book in disciplines ranging from English to research strategies to Washburn 101, a First Year Experience class.
Established in 2007, the Washburn iREAD program gives students the opportunity to participate in a common reading experience that expands their critical thinking, discussion and reading skills, while also fostering campus involvement and enhancement of the campus community.
The iREAD program encourages the university mission of “learning for a lifetime” and creates partnerships across campus and in the community. The community is invited to join Washburn in reading “Our Boys” and take part in the discussions that will take place.
