Celebrate the history of Washburn baseball, May 5

150 logoJoin Washburn in celebrating the rich heritage of Ichabod baseball at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 5 as the Ichabods take on the Emporia State University Hornets. Enjoy free admission to the game, baseball memorabilia, trivia and bingo. Retro baseball hats will be on sale for $21.99, plus tax, along with other Washburn items. The first 150 people in attendance will receive a free Washburn Sesquicentennial baseball t-shirt.

The Washburn Alumni Association will host a tailgate party starting at 5 p.m. The event is free of charge to dues paid members of the Alumni Association, $5 per person for non-members and free for children 12 and younger. Hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages provided, while supplies last. Alumni Association members should bring their membership card for free admission. Reservations can be made by May 2 to or 785-670-1641.

Baseball was the first athletic team organized at Washburn University. The first game was played in March 1879 in a double header with the University of Kansas. The teams split, each winning one game.

The Sesquicentennial Baseball game is one of a series of events leading up to Washburn’s sesquicentennial in 2015. In honoring Washburn’s traditions, segments of the university’s history will be recognized during the school years leading up to the official sesquicentennial year.
