Washburn Institute of Technology seeks applications for an Electrical Technology technical instructor for the 2014-2015 school year. The successful candidate will be required to submit to a background check prior to hire. This is a 12-month, full-time position with possibility of renewal.  The person hired will be assigned to Lawrence Gardner High School at the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex (KJCC) in Topeka. The person hired must satisfy a Kansas Department of Corrections’ background security screening, and must attend standard basic training classes on KJCC security and safety procedures. The person hired for the Technical Instructor position must have or attain NCCER Electrical Level I, NCCER Safety Orientation and OSHA Construction Industry Certifications within 6 months of start date.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Instructors are expected to provide positive role models for students. Instruction shall be based on current state-of-the-art practices in the field.

  • Participate in the development, organization, implementation and evaluation of curriculum.
  • Participate in developing standards for student admission, progression and program completion.
  • Develop course objectives and content and laboratory experiences and implement the course of study in cooperation with other faculty.
  • Teach both theoretical and practical learning experiences.
  • Select and maintain appropriate materials, audiovisuals and equipment to enhance student education.
  • Direct, guide and evaluate student performance in a laboratory setting.
  • Maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain student records pertaining to the program.
  • Evaluate each course taught and performance in teaching.
  • Assist in selection, recruitment, retention, evaluation, advising and counseling of      program students.
  • Submit recommendations related to budget and purchases.
  • Participate in professional organizations and advisory committees.
  • Attend seminars, conferences and workshops.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships and constructive interaction with other technical instructors, staff, cooperating agencies and community groups.
  • Serve as a member of committees as assigned.
  • Perform all other functions necessary for the proper operation of assigned courses.
  • Move and maneuver equipment and materials weighing as much as 50 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:  High school diploma or GED equivalent. Two years or ‘4000 hours’ work experience as an electrician.

PREFERRED:  Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology in Electrical Technology or a related field. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
