Washburn University seeks applications from experienced, energetic human resource professionals interested in serving as Director of Human Resources at Washburn University.  This position reports to the Vice President for Administration and Treasurer (VPAT) and holds responsibility for talent management and development along with direction of a customer-focused human resources program that serves Washburn University and Washburn Institute of Technology.


Plans, administers and directs a comprehensive human resources (HR) program for Washburn University/Washburn Institute of Technology (WU) which includes benefits, training, classified and administrative recruitment and employment, personnel records, compensation, employee and labor relations; ensures compliance with federal and state employment laws and supports University programs and goals.  Advises University executive staff and administrators in matters relating to human resources programs, and keeps the VPAT fully advised of developments and concerns that may impact the University.

Mediates employee and bargaining unit disputes to reconcile conflicts and facilitate workplace harmony.

Counsels and advises supervisors, staff and employees to assist in resolution of employment issues in a way that ensures fair and equitable treatment of staff, complies with federal and state laws and promotes the University’s interests. 

Working closely with a benefits advisory committee, evaluates the University’s employee benefits package and explores options for benefit enhancement.  Meets with insurance and investment company representatives to discuss issues that may affect WU employees such as new offerings, changes in tax law, changing University needs, etc., and ensure optimal benefits offerings.

Serves on/chairs special committees and work groups to accomplish special assignments or projects that affect the University community such as the Washburn University Policies, Regulations and Procedures Manual, United Way, Employee Wellness.

Represents the University and/or participates in negotiations and meetings with the USW Local to ensure the University’s interests are represented in resolution of issues that arise under the Memorandum of Agreement.  Serves as lead of the contract negotiation team to negotiate terms of bargaining unit agreements on behalf of the University.

Compiles and analyzes data to identify trends and assess progress toward HR’s established goals.  Reports HR activities and achievements to apprise WU leadership of HR Department effectiveness, efficiency and direction.  Directs and supports HR staff in devising methods for improvement of Department performance and customer service.

Conducts research and evaluates findings to identify industry trends.  Implements talent management and development programs designed to serve current and future workforce needs of the University.

Develops comprehensive compensation packages designed to enhance recruitment and retention of productive, high-performing University staff.

Directs and supervises HR staff to ensure maximum employee performance and encourage professional development among staff members.  Recommends salary adjustments/increases for HR staff based on assessment of performance levels.

Confers and works with upper level managers at WU as part of strategic planning and problem resolution team responsible for implementing programs and services in support of executive staff’s direction for University development.

Compiles and presents budget requests for the HR Department, approves and directs expenditures throughout the fiscal year.

Performs other duties as necessary in support of Department and University goals.


REQUIRED: Master's degree and 5 years of comprehensive senior level experience in Human Resources or bachelor's degree and 8 years of senior level HR experience.  Experience using automated HR systems and record-keeping.

PREFERRED: Master's degree in Human Resources, Public Administration or related field. Experience using a relational database such as Banner. Mediation certification.  Experience in labor relations. Work experience in Higher Education.
