Admissions Counselor

Human Resources seeks candidates for an Admissions Counselor position in the Admissions Office.  The employee reports to the Associate Director of Admissions.  Assigned territories and population(s) served will vary by position.


Territory Management and Recruitment Activities

Territory Management:  Interpret and analyze data from completed recruitment activities to determine those that have been the most successful in improving overall yield, and establish goals for the approaching recruitment year.  Develop and implement a territory recruitment plan to maximize recruitment efforts for an assigned territory and enhance support of overall admission goals.  Document all student interactions and information that will be beneficial in the recruitment and reporting process.  Compile and assess data, develop and prepare reports of recruitment activities, successes and challenges to Admissions and Enrollment Management administrators.

Recruitment:  Schedule visits to high schools and participate in college fairs and other recruitment events to communicate the educational opportunities availability at Washburn University to external populations, i.e., prospective students, parents, alumni, community college transfer students and adult learners.  Host prospective students during campus visits, information days, scholarship receptions and other on-campus events to help visitors get to know the University campus and learn about the opportunities and advantages Washburn University has to offer. Identify and recommend scholarships for students who demonstrate merit as the recruitment process progresses.

Tele-counseling:  Communicate with prospective students, school administrators, guidance/college counselors and other vital decision makers in the college planning process in person, via personal phone calls, written and electronic communication and using current technology to develop and nurture relationships that will encourage enrollment and attendance at Washburn University.

Admissions Office and University Involvement and Support

Working with Admissions Office staff and other stakeholders as appropriate, plan, organize and coordinate events such as information days, scholarship receptions, etc., to ensure the success of each event.  Compile and assess participant evaluation data and make recommendations for future events.

Schedule, supervise and direct the work of a student employee who will help develop the territory’s application pool.

Build relationships with faculty and University staff, serve on University committees, and perform other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED:  Bachelor's degree or degree completion by the end of current semester.  Proven ability to multi-task and handle a variety of assignments.  Commitment to participate in professional organizations related to college admissions.  Ability to travel for extended periods, to move and/or maneuver materials weighing as much as 30 pounds, and to develop rapport and relationships with a variety of individuals including those from under-represented and diverse student populations.  Flexibility to work irregular hours.  Valid Kansas driver's license with driving record acceptable to the University.

PREFERRED:  Experience in college admissions, higher education, and/or collegiate activities.  Ability to speak and understand Spanish.
