Paul Priddy and Sienna Haynes

Success story: Meet Sienna and Paul

For Sienna Haynes and Paul Priddy, Washburn felt like home long before they became Ichabods.

The seniors went to high school in Topeka (Haynes at Shawnee Heights and Priddy at Seaman), and Washburn has been a part of their life as long as they can remember.

“I had been to games, concerts, just about anything you can think of, at Washburn,” said Haynes, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in vocal music performance. “Washburn was definitely the right choice.”

Priddy, a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music performance, connected with Washburn faculty before he even enrolled at the University.

“I attended a lot of camps while I was in high school and participated in the Topeka youth jazz workshop, so I got to know the faculty members while still in high school,” he said. “I chose Washburn because the faculty are welcoming and want to help every single student succeed.”

In addition to devoting hours to practicing and performing, Priddy and Haynes also take advantage of Washburn’s vibrant student life by participating in student groups and organizations.

“What I really enjoy about the student life at Washburn is how inviting everyone is,” Priddy said. “I’ve never felt excluded on campus. The school provides so many activities that you can be a part of.”

Both students credited the Department of Music faculty for honing their skills as musicians.

“The faculty here are amazing, and they really want you to succeed,” Haynes said. “I take vocal lessons from Dr. Garritano (Andrea Garritano, lecturer in voice and director of opera music) and am in the choir with Dr. Kellim (Kevin Kellim, professor of music). Those experiences will help me get to my dream of being an opera singer.”

Haynes and Priddy are recipients of scholarships that allow them to focus on studying, though both work part-time.

“As a music major, I’m really busy all the time, and I barely have time to work,” Priddy said. “So, scholarships have really helped me financially. I don’t have to worry about as many financial issues.”

Haynes plans to pursue a graduate degree in Austria after earning a bachelor’s degree at Washburn, while Priddy plans to begin a career as a pianist.
