Topeka High School AVID Program

As part of an internship for LE 400 in the Spring of 2010, Senior Michelle Neis partnered with the AVID program at Topeka High School.  AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elective course with the mission of ensuring that "students in the middle" have the potential to be successful in a college preparatory path.  Serving as a tutor several days each week, Michelle led and facilitated the AVID tutorial process, including engaging students, asking questions, prompting students to ask their own questions, and helping students find and use resources to answer their questions. Michelle saw her role as a tutor as being "important to positively changing students' attitudes towards learning."
