Mass Media majors have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in advertising, public relations, print and digital film and video at Washburn University. Instructional Media’s television studio, WUCT-CH 13 cable channel, and public TV station, KTWU, provide majors with additional experience. The video and film editing courses are taught in lab facilities in Henderson Learning Center.
Avid Editing Lab - Students in advanced filmmaking courses use the Avid Editing Lab and work with Avid Media Composer, the most proven video and film editing software in the industry, trusted by professional editors in every segment of movie making, television, broadcast, and streaming media. A few recent films edited with this software include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Inception, The Avengers, The Hunger Games (all), The Martian, Captain Phillips, American Hustle, Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, The Dark Knight, Iron Man (all), Transformers (all), Avatar, Black Swan and many more.
Student Media Opportunities
The Washburn Review is a student-run publication dedicated to informing and providing a voice for the general population of Washburn University. The Review has been an award winning, student produced news and information resource on the campus of Washburn University since 1897. The website was launched in 2006. The Kaw Yearbook is a nationally-recognized student publication produced each year by the students of Washburn University. In 2006 it was nominated for a Pacemaker Award, one of the most prestigious awards in college media.
TRIBOD PRODUCTIONS. The organization is designed to allow students to collaborate in production teams to create both original short screenplays and/or films not associated with class assignments and to explore methods of exhibition or screening, including online distribution. Production activity may also be associated with community organizations and others on campus who may request film or video projects.
