Memorial to students & residents
Washburn's student union is a memorial to students and Shawnee County residents who died in service during World War I, World War II and the Korean Conflict. It opened in 1951, built with $250,000 collected from student fees and community support. The complete cost was covered by private contributions. An addition was built in 1966 and it was renovated again in 2001. Trivia: Superstitious? Don't step on the crest. Stepping on the crest in the floor is said to bring bad luck.
