Annual homecoming top hat contest is all Ichabods

One of the favorite accessories of Washburn University’s classy mascot – his top hat – is the inspiration behind a contest that is centered in both creativity and service. The annual top hat decorating contest has 40 entries this year. All money raised will benefit the United Way of Greater Topeka.

Some hats have electronic mechanisms, some are transformed by clay or paint and in some cases, it is hard to tell where the hat is at all. But all entries have one thing in common: they all scream the theme 2012 Washburn Odyssey: Bods in Space.

“People have stepped up their game on how their decorating,” said Angela Valdivia, who was processing hats in the office of student activities and Greek life Monday afternoon. “They really want to be No. 1 in one of the categories.”

Three categories were judged Monday evening: Most creative, best reflection of homecoming theme and best reflection of Washburn spirit. The winners will be announced during Yell Like Hell on Thursday night.

The top hats will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily through Friday in the Memorial Union, main level. The Washburn community will vote with its change for the winner of a people’s choice award. To participate, simply add change to the jar associated with the favorite hat.

Anyone from the campus or Topeka community can participate in the auction by writing their contact information and bid on the associated sheet. Any hat can be purchased for a “Buy Now” price of $50 at the office of student activities and Greek life. All hats will be displayed throughout the week.

The last chance auction will be during Washburn Alumni Association After Hours, from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center.
