Washburn Tech opens bookstore for new year

Washburn Tech bookstoreNothing says “Welcome back to campus” quite like new textbooks, supplies and gear.

At Washburn Tech’s campus on Monday, that first day of school feeling was even more special because, for the first time, Tech has its own full-time bookstore.

It didn’t take Timothy Bouton long to discover the shop’s best deal:

“The pop is $1 – that’s cheaper than any of the machines,” he said smiling. As on the main campus, all 20-ounce soda bottles sold at the store are $1, including tax. Bouton got his books for his first welding classes on Monday and said even though the store was busy the whole process took less than 10 minutes.

“It was nice. Everything went smoothly,” he said.

Ashley Passmore is a new student in the legal office program. She stopped for her books during lunch break – a very busy time of day for the converted classroom space turned full-fledged retail shop. But she said it was easy to get her books and there were lots of other things to check out.

Kay Farley, director of bookstores for Washburn, told students gathered for the formal ribbon cutting on Monday afternoon that this is “your store. Tell us what you want to see in here.”

In addition to textbooks and snacks, visitors will find greeting cards, T-shirts, caps, lanyards, mugs and more with the Washburn Tech logo, backpacks, car decals and, beginning on Tuesday by student request, calculators. So far, Kay Farley said, business is going very well at the shop. It was open one day last week for students who pick up their books and supplies.

The new Tech bookstore represents “just one more step… of Washburn Tech and Washburn University really becoming an institution to serve all students in all ways,” President Jerry Farley said.

A naming contest is planned for the Washburn Tech bookstore in the coming months. Store hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The store is located on the west side of Building A, in the same hallway as health careers classrooms and the child care center.

Washburn University students who pre-ordered their text books can pick them up beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Vogel Room, upper level of the Memorial Union.
