More than 100 booths, featuring both employers and graduate school programs from around the region, will be on hand for a Career and Graduate School Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Washburn’s Lee Arena.
The fair is completely free and open to the public. Typically, between 400 and 500 Washburn students attend the fair, which is sponsored by the Topeka Capital-Journal. Members of the public, including students from other institutions, are welcome to participate.
Professional dress is requested at the career and graduate school fair and anyone who comes seeking employment should come prepared with resumes, said Duane Williams, Washburn career services specialist. About 90 of the 109 booths at the fair will be area employers, estimated Williams, who organized the fair. The remaining booths will be graduate programs from throughout the region.
An orange flag will be used to indicate that a company has internship positions available, Williams said.
Several of the employers participating are returning to the Washburn fair.
“They want to keep their brand visible in front of our students,” Williams said. “You want an continuous presence.”
Two on-campus events on Monday are aimed to help students prepare:
The Resume Roadshow, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday in the common area on the Memorial Union’s main level, will offer free resume critiques and suggestions.
At 2 p.m. in the Vogel Room, second floor, Memorial Union, James Barraclough, career services specialist, will present about using LinkedIn to build your personal network and market yourself to prospective employers.
The LinkedIn session is the first of three Social Media Monday events planned for September. Facebook will be featured Sept. 16 and Twitter will be the topic Sept. 23. All three Social Media Monday sessions are open to students, faculty and staff and will be held at 2 p.m. in the Vogel Room.
Mark your calendar: Washburn also has a spring career fair, which will be held Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lee Arena.
