Washburn University Student Government Association will collect non-perishable food items, to be given to area food banks for Can Emporia, the 6th annual competition between Washburn University and Emporia State University student government leaders to see which school can donate the most, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during Washburn’s Family Day activities. Cans collected by WSGA will be donated to the Topeka Rescue Mission.
At the kickoff announcement for Can Emporia, on Sept. 27, Barry Feaker, executive director, Topeka Rescue Mission, and Washburn alumnus, reminded the audience, “food equals hope and hunger equals hopelessness.”
The student government president of the losing school will receive a pie in the face at halftime of the Washburn football game verses Emporia State University on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Washburn Student Government Association will sponsor several events to raise awareness and participation in the food drive. Donors may bring cans to the WSGA office, lower level, Memorial Union. For a list of items to donate, contact Micah Offermann, director, public relations, WSGA.
The Can Emporia competition between WU and ESU began in 2007. Washburn has logged three wins; Emporia two. WSGA is celebrating 100 years and was founded in 1912 on the grounds of improving the lives of students on and off campus.
