The Office of International Programs receives and processes initial applications from international students/scholars, and issues immigration documents for their visa applications. After the students/scholars arrive on campus, the Office supports them in their social and academic growth, as well as providing advice on US immigration rules and regulations.
Admission Requirements for:
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate Students
Washburn offers several Bachelor/Undergraduate degree programs. Students applying for admission to an undergraduate program must submit the following to the Office of International Programs:
- International Online Application for Admission
- $70 application and processing fee
- Signed and completed Financial Disclaimer Form, completed by the student and his/her sponsor
- Original financial supporting documents, such as a current bank statement, from the student’s sponsor
- Original transcripts. See Transcript Requirements for more details.
- Recent (within two years) iBT TOEFL, IELTS or DuoLingo English Test (DET) score report. Go to English Proficiency Requirements for more details. Applicants with low iBT TOEFL/ IELTS/DET scores can be admitted into the Intensive English Program first.
Students Studying English Language
If you are applying to Washburn University to study English language only, you are required to submit valid test scores (Duolingo English Test, IELTS, iBT TOEFL, or PTE), but not original transcripts. If you take the Duolingo Test, you must log into your Duolingo account and send scores to Washburn University. The other test scores can be submitted to us as PDFs or pictures. WU will verify them by the test appointment numbers. All English tests must be within 2 years to be valid.
Graduate Students
Graduate Students
Washburn offers several Graduate/Master Degrees. Students applying for admission to a graduate program must complete the admissions process through the Office of International Programs and the academic department of the graduate program in which they are interested.
Please submit the following to the Office of International Programs:
- Online graduate program application form
- $70 application and processing fee
- Signed and completed Financial Disclaimer Form, completed by the student and his/her sponsor
- Original financial supporting documents, such as a current bank statement, from the student’s sponsor
- Original transcripts of courses/grades from the student’s undergraduate degree
Note: If the undergraduate degree was completed outside of the U.S., a course-by-course evaluation of the transcripts must be completed by either ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.) or WES (World Education Services), and an original evaluation report must be sent to Washburn by that evaluation service.

Transfer Students
Students who are already studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa and would like to apply for transfer student admission to Washburn must submit the following:
- International Online Application for Admission
- $70 application and processing fee
- Signed and completed Financial Disclaimer Form, completed by the student and his/her sponsor
- Original financial supporting documents, such as a current bank statement, from the student's sponsor
- For full academic admission, proof of English proficiency. Go to English Proficiency Requirements for more details. Note: Applicants who are not able to meet this requirement can be admitted into the Intensive English Program first.
- Copies of the student’s current Form I-20 (pages 1 and 2), current F-1 visa and passport I.D./picture page
- The Transfer Eligibility Form, completed by the student and an international student advisor at the student’s current university/college/language program.
- Official transcripts of courses/grades, sent by the student’s current US university/college/language program directly to the Office of International Programs. See Transcript Requirements for more details.
Exchange Students
Exchange students are students who are currently attending one of Washburn's partner universities, will attend Washburn for a one or two-semester exchange program, and then return to their home country to continue their studies.
Students may be required to submit additional documents to their home university to study on exchange at Washburn, so they should check with the international office at their home university for more details.
Exchange students need to submit the following to the Office of International Programs:
- International Online Application for Admission
- Signed and Completed Financial Disclaimer Form
- Original Financial supporting documents, such as a current bank statement or proof of scholarship
- iBT TOEFL or IELTS score report if applying for full admission. See English Proficiency Requirements for more details
- Attested transcripts of courses/grades from their current university
Application Deadlines
- For Spring semester (mid-January to mid-May): November 15
- For Summer term: March 15
- For Fall semester (mid-August through mid-December): June 15

Undergraduate students whose native language is not English can meet Washburn's English Proficiency Requirement in multiple ways.
Scholarships
Qualified F-1 international students who enroll full-time at Washburn University within one year of graduation from high school may be eligible for an International Freshman Merit Scholarship. Award amounts vary from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year and are based on your high school GPA. Freshman merit scholarships are renewable for up to eight consecutive semesters.

For current F-1 students at Washburn:
Concurrent Enrollment Form – for students who are taking courses at WU and another U.S. university at the same time
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an immigration benefit for eligible F-1 students who are planning to participate in an off-campus internship. Both of the forms below are required to complete.

International Mailing Form - for students who wish to have the Office of International Programs mail their diploma and/or transcript to their home country address by FedEx. The mailing fee is $60.
Health Insurance Waiver Request Form – for students who already have a health insurance policy equal to Washburn’s and want to apply for a waiver of the Washburn policy.
Non-Inclusion Waiver Form - for students who have completed some university credit in their home country but do not wish to transfer any of this credit to Washburn.
Off-Campus Employment Based on Severe Economic Hardship – for students experiencing financial difficulty due to circumstances beyond their control
Optional Practical Training (OPT) - Immigration benefit available to qualified F-1 students which allows them to gain practical experience in their field of study before (Pre-Completion OPT) or after (Post-Completion OPT) graduation.

Program Extension Request Form – for students who are requesting an extension of the end date of their current Form I-20
Reduced Course Load Request Form – for students requesting to enroll in less than a full-time course load during the current semester
Reinstatement – for students who have failed to maintain their F-1 status and want to apply to the US CIS to regain their F-1 status
Transfer Out Online Form – for current WU international students who wish to transfer out to another U.S. university. Please also submit a copy of your acceptance letter to the new university to the Office of International Programs.
International students who have completed college-level courses outside the United States may be requested to submit proof of accreditation by the Ministry of Education and/or provide an evaluation from an authorized international credential evaluation agency such as Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES). For students who have completed a baccalaureate or associate with a similar duration as a domestic baccalaureate or associate degree from an accredited international institution; courses satisfactorily completed in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics will be accepted towards credit in the appropriate general education distribution area.
Department chairs determine how major courses will transfer and transfer students must provide appropriate documentation (course description and course syllabus) to the chairperson to make an informed decision.
