Auditing a class at Washburn

Kansas residents 60 years of age and over may audit credit courses at Washburn University without paying University tuition, University fees or activities fee charges. The costs of materials and/or textbooks are the responsibility of the auditor.

Registration for 60 and over tuition-free audit classes will be Friday, August 16, 2024 in Morgan Hall, Room 100.

Auditor participation

As an auditor, you are a valued classroom guest. Your level of participation will depend on the nature of the class and credit-seeking students' needs. If you would like to participate in class discussion and group activities, please touch base with the instructor before classes begin. Instructors may ask you not to participate or, as the class progresses, to participate less to maximize student learning. Please respect your instructor's decisions.

Grades

Auditors won't need to do homework and writing assignments or to take examinations. You are welcome to do so for personal enrichment—just be aware that instructors will not provide written feedback and/or grades.

Code of Conduct

Auditors must follow the student code of conduct. The values that provide the foundation of the student code of conduct include an expectation of respect for the course instructor and fellow students:

"At Washburn University, student members of the community are expected to uphold and abide by certain standards of conduct within a set of core values that include integrity, excellence, inclusion, accountability, respect, collaboration and innovation."

If an auditor does not follow instructor directions, is disruptive, or otherwise behaves in a way the instructor believes is detrimental to the class, the instructor, department chair or dean may rescind consent to audit the class and/or future classes.

How to enroll as an auditor

All auditors must be at least 60 years old on or before the first day of the semester/term in which the class is taught. You should be prepared to verify your birth date, either with a driver's license or other government-issued id or birth certificate, when you register.

Auditors may enroll in any class listed as open to 60+ auditors. Some classes are not open to auditors or have limited seats available. Instructors are not able to honor personal requests to accept auditors, and we respectfully ask that you do not email faculty to ask for exceptions.

If you are a first-time participant to this program, please complete the 60 and Over Tuition-free Audit program application. A link to the application is below.

Registration for 60 and over tuition-free classes will be Friday, January 17, 2025 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Morgan Hall, Room 100.
