“I often think back fondly of my time at Washburn and of the truly wonderful professors with whom I interacted … I consider my English training as an Ichabod to be a gift in my life.” -Christian Goering

As a department, we are dedicated to your success. The small size of our classes ensures a student/faculty ratio that allows for individual attention, mentorship, and customized assistance according to our students’ diverse needs and aspirations.
We offer a wide variety of courses taught by faculty who are active scholars and writers with terminal degrees in their areas of expertise, and who bring their research to the classroom and encourage student involvement.
We believe that Washburn University provides an excellent environment for student success and many enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom.
The English department sponsors the Phi Rho chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society. Students should contact the chairperson for information regarding the Society.
“During my time at Washburn, what I grew to really love was the faculty. My English professors were intelligent, personable, and inspiring. They took the time to get to know me outside of the academic environment, and held me to a high standard in their classroom. I'm fortunate to have learned from them, and I gained a confidence in my subject matter that truly has prepared me for my profession.” –Heather Averill, Secondary English Education, Graduated Spring 2015
