Washburn University awards Living Well award to Dave Alden

Dave Alden, head coach, Washburn tennis, has been awarded the Living Well at Washburn award. The Living Well at Washburn Award is given to Washburn University employees who are committed to keeping themselves healthy as well as rewarding individuals who possess the self-leadership skills necessary to maintain their own wellness status.

In December 2011, Alden’s wife, Megan Alden, passed away from melanoma less than six months after her initial diagnosis, leaving behind two young daughters. During her illness, several friends and family members completed Ironman Triathlons on her behalf to raise money for their medical expenses. This act of physical endurance and generosity planted a seed in Alden’s head. In May 2011, he decided he would complete an Ironman Triathlon in honor of his wife.

An Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and a marathon 26.2 mile run, raced in that order and without a break. Training for this event usually begins nine to 12 months beforehand. Alden started training in June 2011 with the help fellow co-worker and seasoned marathoner Dave Provorse, chair and associate professor, psychology. However, being a single dad with a full time job, Alden found it challenging to stick with his training and eating plan. Less than 3 months later, Alden decided to power though and completed his first Ironman Triathlon on Aug. 26, 2012 in Louisville, Ky finishing in 16 hours and two minutes. Prior to this Ironman the farthest Alden had biked during training was 56 miles.

Alden’s story is both inspiring and motivating and is why Alden deserves the Living Well at Washburn Award. The Living Well at Washburn Award is given to Washburn employees who are committed to keeping themselves healthy as well as rewarding individuals who possess the self-leadership skills necessary to maintain their own wellness status.
