Why Major in English at Washburn?

As a department, we are dedicated to your success. The small size of our classes ensures a student/faculty ratio that allows for individual attention, mentorship, and customized assistance according to our students’ diverse needs and aspirations.

We offer a wide variety of courses taught by faculty who are active scholars and writers with terminal degrees in their areas of expertise, and who bring their research to the classroom and encourage student involvement.

We believe that Washburn University provides an excellent environment for student success and many enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom.

The English department sponsors the Phi Rho chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society. Students should contact the chairperson for information regarding the Society.

“I treasure my years in the English Department at Washburn. The faculty couples expertise with accessibility, which makes for intense, challenging, and therefore, highly rewarding classes. I consider each of my professors a mentor in the exploration of the powers of language, literature, and the creative process. I count myself as a proud graduate of a truly transformative program.” –Peter Rocha, Creative Writing, Graduated Spring 2015
