Premiere Performance of THE WAY OF LIGHT

May 24, 6:30-9:30pm, White Concert Hall

Experience the premiere of "THE WAY OF LIGHT," an original spoken word operetta performed by artist vanessa german and an intergenerational community choir. This work— both a performance piece and a work of public art— weaves together movement, collective voice, and ritual in commemoration of Brown v. Board at 70. A public reception will take place at 6:30pm, and the operetta will begin at 8pm. A talk-back discussion with german and members of the choir will follow the performance.

 

Mulvane Art Fair

June 1, 10am-5pm & June 2, 10am-3pm, Washburn University

Join the Mulvane Art Museum and Friends (FOMAM) for the 30th anniversary of the art fair and the museum’s 100th anniversary. Featuring more than 90 artist booths, food trucks, music, and special activities, this promises to be the best art fair yet!

 

Mulvane Art Lab at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center

June 14, July 5, and July 19, 10am-12pm, Kansas Childrens Discovery Center

Requires admission to the Discovery Center, $9

The Mulvane Art Lab is going mobile with STEAM this summer at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center! Get creative with nature’s paintbrushes, create your chalk, and mix your clay.

 

Power Figure Workshop

June 22, 1-4pm, Rita Blitt Gallery

Join Education Coordinator Stacy Ash and Academic & Exhibitions Curator Sara Stepp in a tour and conversation of the exhibition, CRAVING LIGHT: The Museum of Love and Reckoning, followed by an artmaking workshop. Participants will have the opportunity explore and create their own power figures inspired by the work of artist vanessa german. The tour and workshop are free and open to the public.  

 

Outdoor Youth Art Camp

June 25-27, 9am-12pm, Mulvane Art Museum Courtyard

Ages: 7-12; Registration $45 for all three days

Join us for a 3-day youth art camp in the courtyard of the Mulvane Art Museum. Each day will feature a new artmaking experience, beginning with batik fabric dyeing, followed by papermaking, and ending with chalk making. Activities led by Education Coordinator Stacy Ash.

 

En plein air Painting Workshop with Ye Wang

July 13, 9-11am, Art Building, Washburn University

Registration $25

Join us for a plein air (outdoor) painting workshop led by Washburn art professor, Ye Wang. Registration is required (link available soon).

 

Printmaking Workshop with Michael Hager 

July 27, 1-4pm, Art Lab

Registration $25

Learn how to create a one-of-a-kind linocut print! Guided by Washburn art professor Michael Hager, participants will carve their own linoleum blocks and then print using a table-top press. Registration is required (link available soon).

 

CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF ART

September 7, 12-4 pm, Mulvane Art Museum

Join the Mulvane Art Museum in a celebration of art that spans 100 years of serving the community as Topeka’s and Washburn University’s art museum. All galleries and the Art Lab will be open. There will be live music and entertainment, an outdoor tent filled with artmaking activities, scavenger hunts, live animals, food trucks, birthday cake, and so much more. This event is free and open to the public.

A few highlights:

  • Explore the Mulvane galleries as you follow a scavenger hunt to earn a special prize.
  • The Last Carnival: Be amazed by fire performers!
  • 100 Years of Animals: With the help of the Topeka Zoo, we will transform the Art Lab into an encounter with animals! The program includes a presentation, educational games, interaction with live animals, and discussions.
  • Workshop with Juniper Tangpuz: Get creative with us at this artmaking activity for families. Artist Juniper Tangpuz will lead participants in constructing their own animal-inspired sculptures.
  • Performance by Dennis Rogers: Experience the mesmerizing process of Navajo sand painting. Artist Dennis Rogers will performs this ritualistic craft handed down to him from his father and grandfather.
